I love a good study. Searching and reviewing what’s being looked at in the world of health and nutrition. That being said, when looking at other blogs, newspaper articles, magazines or listening to what other people talk about in regards to the most recent trends, they will always go back to a certain study on why it’s the thing to do or follow.

I have some issues with this. Yes it’s good to improve on one’s knowledge and even share it as second hand information, another is to go around saying how it’s the ‘truth’ and everything else is wrong. Years ago a study was done on cholesterol. Two rabbits were used for this. The rabbits were fed a diet exclusively cholesterol based (I don’t know exactly what they were fed) Over time the scientist found that both rabbits died from heart disease. Arteries clogged with cholesterol. Sometimes things are just done for knowledge right, it was a shame two rabbits had to die for it. Anyway, with this information, someone somewhere decided to use this for their own agenda and it bled into the zigiest of health and fitness. Which then snow balled in fat reduction recommendations, low fat (high sugar) products and so on. No one stopped to think that feeding an animal that’s primarily a vegetarian, loads of animal fat isn’t really something to base a human diet around. We are not rabbits.

Another study was done on the effects of aspartame on mice. Studies like these (not that I agree should be done on animals) are insightful. Yet that’s where it should end. The mice were fed large amounts of aspartame, over some time they developed cancer. Though the amount they were given apparently, was like feeding a person 20,000 cans of diet coke a day (approx). They should never be used as a way to measure the human diet. Especially when some company or person never references the whole thing just parts that would benefit them.

Honestly, if you feed a human being enough man made chemicals It’s common sense there’s going to be a bad outcome. Time and time again, I would stand in front of dozens of people having to enforce that no matter what animal study is referenced in a newspaper/magazine/internet it should always be looked at with objective eyes. People will always bend the truth of a study to benifit themselves or their company. Keyes did it with is “7” country study. All big companies have funded studies to work in their favour, to get the outcome they want. This isn’t new.
I feel everything has its ‘lane’. A doctor prescribes pills, a surgeon cuts and a trainer makes you fitter. Animal studies should be just for knowledge. We are not mice, rats or rabbits and should not be compared to them, as if we are the same type of animal. If anything we are closer to pigs, though I wouldn’t want to base my diet around them either.
Stay healthy
